Socialization is NOT Exposure… – YouTube
In this YouTube short picked out by Doctor Orion the Veterinarian, he calls out Method K9 who raises an important point regarding the use of the term “socialization”. Instead, she suggests the term “exposure” might better capture the essence of what dogs and owners need to hear. It’s surprising that this hasn’t been questioned more thoroughly in the past, as trainers are often heard reiterating the meaning of socialization on their socials. The concern for trainers should be that using this term might actually set dogs up for failure by owners, as it may not accurately represent the process and goals.
Doctor Orion believes that changing this word would cause more behavioural issues with dogs, rather than perhaps suggesting that there is more to consider in this argument.
Method K9 has made her career working closely with dog owners to help them understand their handling and methods and is all to aware how they often misinterpret the need to “socialize” their dogs, thinking it means extensive interaction with other dogs and people.
Doctor Orion seems to have a different perspective, possibly not viewing this as a significant issue, but instead uses his platform to pick holes in exceptionally good dog trainers that will only lead to more misinformation being put out to dog owners. The ongoing “them vs us” argument is not relevant here and he misses the point that this is ultimately for dog owners, not vets or behaviourists.
The contrast in training approaches and the diversity of opinions in the world of dog handling does not need this kind of conflict. It would be better to tailor methods from both sides of the argument to meet the needs of the dog and owner, focusing on what works best for their unique personalities, and not which method is right or wrong.
So could it be possible that “exposure” would aid dog owners in understanding what their dog really needs in the early stages of life?
Would it stop many of the behavioural issues seen in dogs today or create more?
